Punjab: Sarabjit’s return unlikely due to lack of extradition treaty

Punjab: Sarabjit Kaur, who left the Sikh jatha midway during Guru Nanak Dev’s “Prakash Parv” to marry a Pakistani national, has little hope of returning, as there is no extradition treaty between India and Pakistan. Confirming this, SGPC legal advisor Amanbir Singh Siali said that she cannot return to her country because there is no extradition treaty between the two neighboring countries, which were on the brink of a full-scale war a few months ago. On November 18, Acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht, Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, announced that Sarabjit would soon return to her country after receiving assurances from the Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee.
The SGPC will make representations to both the Indian and Pakistani governments to investigate the “mistakes” made in Sarabjit Kaur’s case. Siali said that the Indian government should answer how she was granted a passport and permission to travel to Pakistan when three cases were already registered against her. A communique will be sent to the Pakistani government’s embassy in Delhi, stating that no action has been taken against him for violating visa rules, as he obtained it solely to visit Sikh shrines on the holy occasion. Instead, the Pakistani judiciary granted him a judicial stay for overstaying in Pakistan, he confirmed.
