Scientists find, heart attack patients with Kovid-19 have more clotting
New Delhi (IANS) | Researchers have found that a large amount of clots accumulate in the arteries of patients with heart disease suffering from Kovid-19. According to The North American COVID-19 analysis, clots in multiple arteries were seen in close to 30 percent of patients, an event seen in less than five percent of patients with heart attacks who do not have COVID-19.
An ST-elevated myocardial infarction or STEMI type of heart attack is caused by a sudden blockage in a coronary artery.
Previous research from NACMI has shown that the death rate increases by 20 to 25 percent in patients with covid-19 and heart attack.
Payam Dehghani, co-director of Prairie Vascular Research Inc. and associate professor at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, said COVID-19 is a clotting disease and now we see its effects in the coronary arteries.
These new findings point to the need for blood-thinning strategies, early intervention and follow-up, Dehghani said.
For the study, angiograms from 234 patients from 17 sites (12 US, 5 Canada) were analyzed.
The researchers noted that further investigation is needed to better understand the effects of COVID-19 and vaccinations related to heart attacks, as well as long-term outcomes.
The findings were presented at the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) 2023 Scientific Sessions.
