Tamil Nadu: Panchayat secretary suspended for supporting political party in elections

Tamil Nadu: Action has been taken against a Panchayat Secretary in Villupuram district, Tamil Nadu, for allegedly supporting a political party during the Assembly elections. The officer has been suspended on orders from the district administration. This action has sparked widespread discussion within local administrative circles.

According to reports, Muniandi (52), who served as Panchayat Secretary in the Venkanthur Panchayat Council, which falls under the Mayilam Panchayat Union, was accused of working for and supporting a political party during the recent Assembly elections. A departmental investigation was initiated following a complaint.

According to sources, as a government employee, maintaining a distance from political activities during the election process is considered part of service rules. The investigation was being conducted based on this basis. Relevant documents and other information were collected during the investigation.

After reviewing the matter, the District Rural Development Department administration, on the instructions of Villupuram District Magistrate Sheikh Abdul Rahman, issued a suspension order against Panchayat Secretary Muniandi on Tuesday. Upon the issuance of the order, he was suspended with immediate effect.

Administrative officials state that government employees are required to adhere to service rules and maintaining impartiality during elections is considered essential. Therefore, departmental action was taken upon receiving the complaint.

However, no official response has yet been issued by the Panchayat Secretary in this matter. The departmental investigation is expected to continue. Further action may be decided based on the investigation report.

Reactions to this action are varied at the local level. Some say that the impartial role of government employees during elections is crucial, while others say a final decision will be made only after a thorough investigation.

The administration has clarified that action will continue if violations are found in election-related matters. Officials say that adherence to service rules is essential to maintaining a fair administrative system.

Following this action, other government employees in the district are also being advised to be vigilant regarding election conduct and service rules. At present the matter is under departmental investigation and further process will proceed on the basis of administrative report.
