Indian women’s recurve, men’s compound teams win bronze medals

Bangkok: The Indian women’s recurve and men’s compound archery teams won bronze medals at the Asian Archery Championships on Wednesday. In the bronze medal match of women’s recurve team, the team of Tisha Punia, Bhajan Kaur and Ankita Bhakta defeated Chinese Taipei 5-1. Chinese Taipei was led by 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medalist Chien-Ying Lei, according to Olympics.com.

The Indian trio lost 6-2 to South Korea in the semi-finals, which included the opposition led by defending Olympic champion An San. This defeat ended India’s hopes of its first Paris 2024 Olympic quota in archery. The event is the third qualifier for the Paris Olympics for Indian archers.

The top-placed team per gender receives a Paris Olympic quota. The men’s team comprising Dheeraj Bommadevara, Praveen Jadhav and Olympian Tarundeep Rai crashed out after losing 5-4 to Kazakhstan in the quarter-finals.

Indian archers failed to clinch Olympic quotas at the World Archery Championships and Asian Games earlier this year.

In non-Olympic compound archery, the men’s team of 2018 Asian Games champion Abhishek Verma, Prathamesh Phuge and U21 world champion Priyansh won the bronze medal after defeating Chinese Taipei 29-28 in a thrilling shoot-off when the score read 235 after two sets. But it was equal. set.

The medal-winning men’s compound trio were placed second in the qualifying round and received a bye to the quarter-finals, where they defeated Vietnam 236–230.

In the semi-finals, India lost to Kazakhstan 237–236 and were left in the race for the bronze medal.

The women’s compound team of Aditi Swamy, Jyoti Surekha Vennam and Preneet Kaur defeated Thailand 228-217 in the semi-finals to reach the gold medal match.

India will face Chinese Taipei in the final on Thursday.

Surekha and Preneet also reached the finals of the individual women’s compound and will face each other in the title clash on Thursday.

Aditi topped the qualification but lost to Bangladesh’s Bona Akter in the third round.

Aditi, however, made up for the loss by defeating Kazakhstan’s Adele Zekshenbinova and Andrey Tyutyun 157-155 in the semi-finals and reaching the final of the mixed team event with Priyansh.

On Thursday, they will face Thailand’s Kanoknapas Kaewchomphu and Lertrungsilp Nawayut. Abhishek Verma will be aiming to win a bronze medal in the individual men’s compound event after losing 148-146 to Andrey Tytun of Kazakhstan in the semi-finals.

The Asian Archery Championships is being held from November 3 to 10.
