Chandigarh: Tourists are welcomed with garbage at the ‘Gateway of Punjab’
Mohali: Tourists are being greeted with garbage and foul smell at the gateway of Punjab these days. Garbage is lying at several places on the Landran-Kharar national highway near Kailon village, making it difficult to pass through the stretch because of the foul smell. Travellers say that the NHAI, Municipal Corporation and GMADA officials have not taken any action on the problem. The garbage is lying on the roadside near housing societies and village areas for almost a month now; however, the recent rains have worsened the situation, with the risk of diseases increasing every day.
Local residents expressed ignorance about who throws garbage on the road; however, it is an open secret that there are no dustbins in the area and there is no designated place in the city to collect and dispose garbage. Jaswinder Gill, a resident of Kailon, said, “Most of the nearby housing societies or RWAs have hired private contractors who collect and take away the garbage from here. We don’t know where they dump it. The sanitation situation is very bad in the villages here.”
