Farmer commits suicide during protest against dam in Amravati district of Maharashtra

A 44-year-old farmer died by suicide at the site of ongoing protests regarding a dam in Maharashtra’s Amravati district on Saturday, a police officer said.

Superintendent of Police Vishal Anand told PTI that a group of farmers affected by the Upper Wardha Dam is agitating in Morshi in the district over compensation.

The dam is located about 50 km from the district headquarters.

Anand said, one of the protesting farmers hanged himself on the stage set up for the protest in the early hours of Saturday.

An official said that after the farmer’s suicide, the protesters stopped the movement of vehicles in the area.

In August 2023, a group of protesters climbed over the security net installed on the first floor of the ministry in Mumbai demanding fair compensation for their land acquired for the Upper Wardha Dam project.

An official had said that the Morshi protesters were demanding four acres of agricultural land for every villager and government jobs for project affected people, whose land was acquired for the dam project.
