Maharashtra: Mumbai’s Temperature Drops by 10°C Following Heatwave; Some Relief from the Heat

Maharashtra: After enduring three heatwaves, Mumbai and its surrounding areas have witnessed a drop of approximately 10°C in temperature over the past 4–5 days, offering some respite from the scorching heat and humidity. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a cyclonic circulation has formed over Madhya Pradesh and is currently moving across the Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra. This phenomenon is creating breezy conditions and weather patterns conducive to rainfall, resulting in a decline in temperatures.
On Thursday, an ‘Orange Alert’ for thunderstorms accompanied by rain was issued for several districts of Maharashtra, and light rainfall was also forecast for Mumbai and its neighboring districts. Although the region did not receive any rain, the shift in weather conditions provided temporary relief from the intense heat.
At Mumbai’s Santacruz observatory, the maximum temperature recorded was 30.7°C—1.4°C below normal. Meanwhile, the Colaba observatory recorded a maximum temperature of 32.4°C—2°C below normal.
According to the local weather forecast for Mumbai city and its suburbs for the next 24 hours, the maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 31°C and 22°C, respectively. Temperatures are likely to dip slightly further before gradually beginning to rise again. In what stands as a rare historical occurrence, the North Konkan region (comprising Mumbai and neighboring districts) experienced three heatwaves within just the first fortnight of March. As per the IMD’s ‘Hot Weather Forecast’ for the period of March to May 2026, additional heatwaves are anticipated during the months of April and May.
