IAS officer’s son arrested in cyber crime crackdown

Guwahati: In a significant development, Tasdikur Rehman, son of IAS officer Atiqa Sultana, has been arrested by the police in Guwahati as part of a major operation targeting cyber criminals. Rehman, one of the key accused in this high-profile case, had been evading law enforcement for more than a month and a half after his involvement first came to light in September.

Rehman’s association with an international network of cyber criminals involved in defrauding citizens prompted an ongoing search to be launched. When the crackdown on cyber criminals intensified, he managed to escape capture, while the crime branch had seized several vehicles linked to him in previous raids. At present Tasdikur Rehman is in the custody of Crime Branch.

The arrest took place from his flat located in Islambasti near Gandhibasti area of Guwahati, as he was living outside the state during the period of hiding.

Notably, earlier a significant operation was conducted against international cyber criminals in Guwahati city which resulted in the detention of 144 male and 47 female employees of the gang during September.

Commenting on the development, Guwahati Police Commissioner Diganta Barah said, “We had received information about fake call centers operating in Guwahati for the last two years. These call centers operate at night and there is no activity during the day. “Since we lacked specific information.” Based on the location details, we started our investigation and identified the mastermind behind the operation.”

He also revealed that they have obtained the list of call centers and their operating bases. “Our information indicates that more than 50 call centers in the city are involved in defrauding innocent Indian and foreign citizens and siphoning off their hard-earned money. To deal with this problem, we have identified eight locations in the city Where these call centers are running and targeted them. Simultaneous raids were conducted with teams of more than 15 police personnel, each led by a senior officer, covering multiple locations including residences, buildings and malls,” he said. Said.

The arrest of Tasdikur Rahman marks a significant breakthrough in the fight against cyber crime in Guwahati. The operation, which initially began as an investigation into fake call centres, has transformed into a broader effort to dismantle an international cyber criminal network responsible for defrauding numerous individuals both in India and abroad.

The diligent work of law enforcement agencies including Guwahati Police resulted in the capture of a key suspect and dismantling of several illegal operations. This development is an important step towards improving the security of citizens in the digital age.
