Maharashtra opposition demands caste census on the lines of Bihar
Nagpur: Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar on Tuesday demanded the state government to conduct caste-based census like Bihar.
Spoke in the Assembly during the ongoing winter session of the state legislature here. He said, “Maharashtra government should conduct caste-wise census in the state following the guidelines of Bihar government. We are not opposed to any particular community getting the benefit of quota.”
“The census should determine how many backward people there are in each community in the state,” he said.
In October, the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar published the results of its caste survey, which showed that Other Endangered Classes (OBC) and Extremely Endangered Classes (EBC)
Since the Bihar caste survey was published, national Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been pushing for conducting a caste census in the country.
On the eve of assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi described the caste census as a “radiography” that will reveal the proportion of OBCs, Dalits and tribals in the population.
