More than 75,000 teachers in government schools will get tabs

CHENNAI: Under a digital initiative, more than 75,000 teachers in government schools in Tamil Nadu will soon get hi-tech computer tablets.

According to a senior official of the School Education Department, Tamil Nadu Textbook and Educational Services Corporation has been entrusted with the task of purchasing tablet computers under the Teacher Resource Package for teachers at the primary level by the State Project Directorate, Samagra Shiksha. Are distributing them.

“The corporation has proposed to purchase 79,723 tablet computers,” he said. “A tender has been issued to purchase the system in this regard,” he said.

The official said the tablets are aimed at helping teachers maintain online presence, post part coverage details and access additional online learning materials.

“They will also operate the Educational Management Information System (EMIS), a common online platform connecting schools, teachers and students through tabs,” he said. “Necessary video tutorials will also be loaded to help the teachers,” he said.

Talking about the configuration of the tab, the official said that the tablet will support 2G, 3G, 4G LTE (which provides faster mobile internet experience). “Similarly, the tab will have 3GB of random access memory (RAM) with 32GB of inbuilt memory that can be expanded up to 512GB,” he said.

Saying that each tab will weigh less than 400 grams, he said it (the tabs) will also have high-quality voice and video calling features. The official said that if each tablet was supplied at Rs 4,000, the total cost to the exchequer would have been around Rs 31 crore.

“Teachers who have received the tabs will be given short-term training on how to use the system effectively,” he said. “Since the Tab will have a one-year warranty, service centers will be set up in all the districts,” he said. ,

The official said the companies supplying the tabs will submit test reports supported by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT-Madras), Anna University and Electronics Test and Development Center (ETDC). “The tender process is expected to be completed by the end of this December,” he said.

“Teachers are likely to get the tab by next January or February, depending on the supply,” the official said.
