Mysuru: News of clash between two groups over temple rituals in Nanjangud
Nanjangud: There was an uproar in the temple when it was reported that a fight broke out between Dalit Sangharsh Samiti members and devotees over the ritual of grinding Andakasur’s rangoli around the temple. This day is celebrated as the “day of darkness” of Andakasura. In this sequence, those carrying the idols of Nanjundeshwar and Parvati crushed and destroyed the rangoli, which symbolically represented the destruction of Andakasura, which is considered to be another name of Mahishasura. Later the procession passed through Rathbidhi. This year, members of Dalit Sangharsh Samiti protested against the ritual, saying they worship Mahishasura like a king and the ritual hurts their sentiments. This led to a heated argument between the two groups. However, hundreds of devotees gathered at the place and the priests explained that they could not give up and continue the tradition that had been going on for years.
