Premier League: Brighton beat Spurs in a six-goal thriller

East Sussex: Brighton & Hove Albion stunned Tottenham Hotspur by winning 4-2 in a thrilling end-to-end match at the Falmer Stadium here.

Brighton moved up to eighth, above Newcastle United, and six points behind Spurs, who have missed the chance to return to the top four.

Brighton went ahead within seven minutes, Welbeck forcing Guglielmo Vicario to make two good saves in the space of a minute. Five minutes later, Joao Pedro produced a brilliant effort down the left before finding Hinshelwood in space and the teenager’s powerful shot went past Vicario and into the roof of the net, reports Premier League.

Brighton doubled their lead in the 23rd minute. From a corner, Jan Paul van Hecke hit a header against the crossbar and Welbeck was pulled back by Dejan Kulusevski in the process, with the penalty awarded following a VAR review. Joao Pedro made no mistake from the spot.

Brighton chased a third goal and Milner hit the post with a curling shot, before Buonote had a goal ruled out for offside and Vicario made another good stop to deny Joao Pedro. . Richardson hit a post for Spurs at the other end, but the Seagulls went into the interval with a reasonable two-goal lead.

Spurs were close to making a dream start to the second half, but were thwarted by an offside flag after Richarlison put the ball in the Brighton net. The Brazilian went close again in the 54th minute and fired a low shot just wide of the steel post.

Moments after Richarlison had another goal disallowed for offside, Estupinan, who had replaced Igor Julio at the break, scored to mark his return after almost two months out with a memorable goal into the top corner. Hit an unstoppable 30-yard shot.

Another Joao Pedro penalty compounded Spurs’ problems, with the Brazilian confidently firing the spot-kick home after a clumsy challenge by Giovani Lo Celso on Ivan Ferguson.

It looked as though Brighton were headed for victory, but the match took a sudden turn as two goals in five minutes for Spurs gave them hope of an extraordinary comeback. Summer signing Veliz scored his first Premier League goal, and Davies then headed home a header from Pedro Porro’s cross.

Nine minutes of stoppage time provided further hope for Spurs, who went ahead in an attempt to salvage an unlikely point. But in the end, Brighton were able to survive the late pressure and secure a deserved win.
