Punjab: Campaign launched against drug abuse
Punjab: Office bearers and activists of various organisations took oath to join hands with the campaign launched by Malerkotla police against drug abuse and illicit trafficking, which have since emerged as a breeding ground for all other social evils. The oath was taken during the concluding session of the programmes organised at various places in the area in response to the call made by Malerkotla police under the supervision of SSP Gagan Ajit Singh. DSP Ahmedgarh Rajan Sharma, DSP Amargarh Davinder Singh Sandhu, DSP Malerkotla Kuldeep Singh and DSP (Special) Ranjit Singh monitored the progress of the campaign, which is part of a state-level initiative. Office bearers and activists of some Muslim organisations, led by councillor Aman Afridi, announced that they would serve as brand ambassadors of the campaign, playing an active role during the programmes designed as part of a proactive and preventive strategy to spread awareness about the causes and consequences of drug abuse and drug trafficking.
They also offered to give relevant information about drug peddlers and their supporters. SHO City Ahmedgarh Aditya Sharma and SHO Sadar Sukhwinder Singh Khurad presided over the programmes organised in their respective areas. Muslim religious leaders led by Mufti Bisharat Rashidi and Qari Furqan Ahmed held that Islam, like other religions practised in India, does not allow consumption of any kind of intoxicants or narcotics. Appreciating the sentiment shown by the residents of the area towards the coordinated movement launched by the police against drug abuse, SSP Gagan Ajit Singh claimed that office bearers of various organisations, including Muslim organisations, have announced that they will work together with the police against the menace of drug abuse, which has ruined many families in the state. “After learning about the revival of the campaign under the supervision of our DGP Gaurav Yadav, most organisations have announced plans to participate in future programmes,” Singh said, appreciating that the leaders of various organisations have understood that drug abuse cannot be tackled without the support of local residents. Singh said the district police have been advised to launch a fresh operation with the help of local residents and leaders.
