Punjab: Demand for traditional baskets falls, artisans worried

Punjab: In various rural areas of the country, the demand for traditional handicrafts, such as winnowing baskets, is steadily declining. Once a necessity in every household, these baskets have now been replaced by modernity and the growing popularity of plastic products. This is directly impacting the artisans whose livelihoods depend entirely on this craft. Made from bamboo and reeds in rural areas, these baskets were not only useful but also environmentally friendly. They were widely used for cleaning grains, storing fruits and vegetables, and for household chores. However, the abundance of cheap and durable plastic products in the market has significantly reduced their demand.
Artisans say that while they once had work year-round, now opportunities are limited. Many families have abandoned this traditional profession and started looking for other jobs. Some artisans are forced to work as laborers, while others are migrating to cities. A local artisan explained that baskets require considerable effort and time to make, but they don’t fetch a fair price in the market. On the other hand, people are increasingly preferring plastic products because they are cheaper. This is gradually pushing the traditional art form to the brink of extinction. Experts believe that if concrete steps are not taken in this direction, this art form could become extinct completely in the coming years. The government is running several schemes to promote handicrafts, but their benefits are not reaching every artisan.
Furthermore, the lack of a proper platform for these products in the market is also a major problem. If these baskets are better presented online and in urban markets, their demand could increase again. Traditional baskets are not only a part of our cultural heritage but are also a safe option for the environment. Therefore, it is important to raise awareness about their importance and provide financial and technical support to artisans. Overall, the declining demand for traditional baskets is becoming a serious concern. If effective steps are not taken in this direction soon, this precious art will be confined to the pages of history.
