Killiyur seat election controversy: Thaveka candidate challenges Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister’s victory

Tamil Nadu: A new controversy has erupted over the results of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections held in the Killiyur Assembly constituency in Kanyakumari district. Thaveka Party candidate and Kanyakumari West District Secretary Sabin filed a complaint with the District Collector and District Election Officer M. Pratap on Tuesday. In the complaint, Sabin sought to declare the election victory of Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister and Congress candidate Rajesh Kumar invalid.

The Killiyur constituency witnessed a close contest between the Congress and Thaveka. Vote counting took place on May 4th, and the two candidates were neck and neck from the initial rounds. Each round saw Rajesh Kumar and Sabin alternate between them, leading to a close contest until the final result.

Ultimately, Congress’s Rajesh Kumar received 66,434 votes, while Thaveka candidate Sabin received 65,123 votes. Thus, Rajesh Kumar was declared the winner by a narrow margin of 1,311 votes. Following his victory, Rajesh Kumar assumed the position of Tourism Minister.

However, Thaveka candidate Sabin decided to challenge the election results, alleging irregularities in the vote counting and election process. He has filed a written complaint with the District Collector and Returning Officer, demanding the cancellation of his victory and a proper investigation.

Local political experts say that the increased competition between the Congress and Thaveka in the Killiyur seat has made the electoral process more sensitive. Rajesh Kumar’s victory by a margin of only 1,311 votes has further strengthened opponents’ doubts about the legitimacy of the result.

The Thaveka party has also taken the matter seriously, stating that Sabin’s complaint is part of a democratic process and can only be resolved after a proper investigation. Meanwhile, the Congress party maintains that the results declared by the Election Commission are valid and Rajesh Kumar’s victory is entirely justified.

The election controversy in the Killiyur assembly seat has sparked new political debates in Tamil Nadu politics. According to political analysts, if the Election Commission investigates the matter, it could impact the results and have potential political consequences.

Rajesh Kumar, who is currently the Tourism Minister, has not yet publicly responded to the complaint. His supporters maintain that all procedures were followed by the Election Commission and relevant officials, and the victory is legitimate.

Voters in Kanyakumari district are closely monitoring this controversy, as the contest between the two major parties was extremely close. It remains to be seen what action the Election Commission takes on Sabin’s complaint and whether it will have any impact on Rajesh Kumar’s victory.
