Tamil Nadu: Man arrested for duping over 500 women of crores of rupees

Tamil Nadu: A 35-year-old man has been arrested in West Bengal. He is accused of defrauding over 500 women across the country of over ₹2 crore through social media and dating apps.

Investigation revealed that he deceived the women by posing as a doctor, lawyer, film producer, and businessman and promising to marry them. Amit Goyal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South-East Delhi, said: “The accused, Anand Kumar, created several fake social media and dating app accounts. Through these, he contacted women and gained their trust by claiming to be from a well-off background.

He then exploited their stress and entered into premarital relationships. Later, he allegedly demanded money from them under the pretext of urgent medical expenses, business losses, and family crises. He is also said to have extorted money from some women by promising them higher education at a top college and modeling opportunities. He is also said to have obtained private photos of some women and then used them to blackmail them for money.

The police registered a case based on a complaint from a woman who was duped of ₹7 lakh under the pretext of marriage and began an investigation. They traced his location through bank account transfers and arrested him in West Bengal on March 22. Several mobile phones, SIM cards, bank account documents, and valuables were seized from him. The investigation revealed It turned out that when some of the women he had duped with the promise of marriage demanded their money back, he falsely assured them that he was dead. The Deputy Commissioner of Police said that further investigations were underway.
