Tamil Nadu takes tough stand on Mekkath Dam dispute, also issues statement regarding fast-track court

Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Power and Law Minister C.T.R. Nirmalkumar has stated that Chief Minister Joseph Vijay will never allow the Karnataka government to build a dam in the Mekkathut region. He made this statement during an event at the Secretariat on Friday, bringing the issue back into political focus.

On the same occasion, Minister Nirmalkumar also handed over appointment orders for 45 Government Assistant Advocates (Level-2) selected by the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission and five Treasurer positions at the Tamil Nadu Government Law Colleges. He congratulated the newly appointed officers on their duties and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the judicial system.

Speaking to the media after the event, the Minister stated that the state government is working rapidly to establish fast-track courts, as per its election promises. He stated that pending cases will be resolved through these courts at a faster pace, reducing delays in the judicial process.

He also clarified that there is currently no ban on filing or hearing cases in the Tamil language and that it is fully encouraged. The Minister said the government is also considering the possibility of further expediting the disposal of pending cases in women’s courts.

Speaking on the alleged sexual assault case of a Coimbatore girl, the Minister said the Chief Minister has advised taking necessary steps to ensure speedy justice in this matter. He said the government is discussing this with the concerned departments to expedite the investigation and trial.

Commenting on the previous government, the Minister alleged that the police department at that time did not take sufficient seriousness in investigating crimes against women and children, leading to delays in many cases. He said the current government is working to strengthen the police system and investigation process to improve this situation.

The statement made regarding the Mekkath Dam has once again sparked discussion about the water dispute between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. However, the state government maintains that it will take all necessary steps to protect its water rights and that no project will be allowed to proceed without consent.

Currently, the government’s focus is on strengthening the judicial system, speeding up the resolution of pending cases, and ensuring strict action in cases involving the safety of women and children.
