Tired of harassment, female farmer commits suicide

Bengaluru (IANS). A woman farmer in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district committed suicide after she was allegedly harassed by employees of a microfinance company for loan repayment. Police gave this information on Saturday.

The deceased has been identified as Deviramma, 64, and the incident took place at Tangali village in Kaduru taluk.

According to the police, the victim had taken a loan of Rs 78 thousand from Rural Kuta Finance Company.

She was in trouble due to crop failure, so she could not pay the installment for a month.

The company employees had since then been regularly visiting her house and allegedly harassing her and pressurizing her to repay the loan.

Unable to tolerate the torture, the woman hanged herself in her house.

A case was registered at Kadur police station against microfinance company employees Shankar Nayak, Usha and Rubina.

The state government has declared Chikkamagaluru as a drought-hit district.

According to government data, three farmers have committed suicide due to drought.
