Tomato robbery: Couple arrested in Karnataka, search for other accused

Bengaluru (IANS). The Karnataka Police has arrested a couple and launched a search for three more accused in a tomato robbery case registered at the RMC Yard police station in Bengaluru. The police gave this information on Saturday.

According to the police, the arrested couple has been identified as Bhaskar and his wife Sindhuja. The search is on for Rocky, Kumar and Mahesh in the case.

The incident took place on 8 July. Miscreants looted a vehicle carrying 2,000 kg of tomatoes after threatening a farmer in Bengaluru.

The incident took place in the limits of RMC yard police station near Chikkajala in Bengaluru. The farmer was carrying tomatoes from Hiriyoor town in Chitradurga district to Kolar market.

After spotting the tomatoes, the gang of miscreants chased the vehicle. They stopped the vehicle and assaulted the farmer and the driver of the Bolero cargo vehicle alleging that their vehicle had been hit.

He demanded money from them and later got the money transferred.

He had boarded the cargo vehicle with the farmer. Later, the miscreants forcefully pushed the farmer out of the vehicle and took away the tomato-laden vehicle.

RMC Yard Police collected CCTV footage and gathered clues. The accused couple had taken the vehicle to Chennai and sold tomatoes there. They had parked the vehicle near Peenya and Bengaluru and fled in another vehicle, which did not have a registration number plate.

Significantly, the prices of tomatoes have reached Rs 120 to 150 in Karnataka.
Farmers are being forced to guard the tomato crop.
