WFI: Election of Wrestling Federation of India banned, big news from High Court
Chandigarh: The Punjab-Haryana High Court has stayed the election of WFI i.e. Wrestling Federation of India till further orders. The election for the wrestling association was to be held tomorrow on 12th August. In fact, four candidates are in the fray for the post of president, while three senior vice-presidents, 6 vice-presidents, three general secretaries, two treasurers, joint secretaries and 9 candidates for the post of executive members. 30 candidates have nominated for 15 posts. A woman has also applied for the post of president.
The matter had reached the court regarding the nomination of Sanjay Singh for the post of president. Sanjay is said to be close to Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the wrestling association and surrounded by allegations of sexual harassment of women wrestlers. The protesting wrestlers, including Bajrang Punia, objected to his candidature. He also raised this issue after meeting Sports Minister Anurag Thakur.
The protesting wrestlers are supporting Anita Sheoran, the only woman candidate for the post of president. Anita is a former Commonwealth Games gold medalist and a witness in the sexual harassment case against Brij Bhushan.
