Ladakh: An earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale occurred in Ladakh on Saturday. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), earthquake tremors were felt in the area at 8.25 am. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at 35.44 latitude and 77.36 longitude at a depth of 10 km.
“Earthquake of intensity: 3.4, occurred on 02-12-2023 at 08:25:38 IST, Latitude: 35.44 & Longitude: 77.36, Depth: 10 km, Location: Ladakh,” NCS said in a post on Twitter.
Both Leh and Ladakh fall in Seismic Zone-IV of the country, which means they are at very high risk in terms of earthquake susceptibility. Located in the tectonically active Himalayan region, Leh and Ladakh are frequently hit by earthquakes.
Earthquake-prone areas of the country have been identified on the basis of scientific information related to seismicity, past earthquakes and tectonic structure of the region. Based on this information, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has divided the country into four seismic zones. Zones V, IV, III and II. Zone V is expected to have the highest level of seismicity while Zone II is associated with the lowest level of seismicity.
