AIADMK suffers major setback in Tamil Nadu elections, 101 candidates’ deposits forfeited

Tamil Nadu: The main opposition party, the AIADMK, has suffered a major setback following the results of the assembly elections. A total of 101 party candidates have lost their deposits. These include several former ministers and senior leaders, raising serious questions about the party’s organizational standing.
The AIADMK fielded candidates in a total of 169 seats, winning only 47. The party suffered a crushing defeat in the remaining 122 seats, finishing third in most constituencies. In several constituencies, AIADMK candidates received so few votes that they failed to secure even one-sixth of the total valid votes cast, resulting in their deposits being forfeited.
The party has suffered significant losses in several key areas, including Chennai. In the capital, former minister Jayakumar, who contested from Royapuram, lost his deposit. Similarly, Gokula Indira, who contested from the Anna Nagar constituency, Valamathi, who contested from Ayyaram Villukku, and Murthy, who contested from Madhavaram, also lost and forfeited their deposits.
Adhirrajaram, who contested against DMK leader Udhayanidhi in the Chepauk-Tiruvallikeni constituency, also failed to make an impact. G. Rajasekharan, who contested against Thaveka leader Vijay in the Trichy East constituency, also faced a weak performance.
AIADMK candidates performed poorly in a total of 101 assembly constituencies, including Madurai East and Cumbum, failing to secure even the required minimum vote percentage and forfeiting their deposits.
According to election analysts, this result is considered a major signal for the AIADMK at both the organizational and political levels. The party will not only have to reconsider its strategy, but also faces the challenge of strengthening its grassroots organization.
Following this major electoral setback, discussions have intensified regarding the AIADMK’s position and role in Tamil Nadu politics. The party leadership is now under increasing pressure to review the reasons for the defeat and formulate a new strategy for the future.
