Brahmaputra’s water level declines, people shocked

Guwahati: The Brahmaputra and its tributaries were in spate till September this year. However, the water level of the mighty river dropped so suddenly that ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati had to be suspended today. People going to the banks of Brahmaputra in Guwahati in September saw that the river was in spate. However, the situation is quite different now. Barring several SARS, the water level has suddenly decreased. When The Sentinel contacted the Inland Water Transport (IWT) today regarding the suspension of ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati, a senior official said, “The sudden drop in the water level of the Brahmaputra in the last few days has forced the paraghats. Have vacated. Ships cannot access existing platforms for operations. This has prompted us to shift the wharves to enable ferry services. We need to build ferries to help passengers reach ships. If everything goes as per plan, we hope to resume ferry services tomorrow. We have seen a drop of about three feet in the water level of this huge river in the last few days. “Such a situation usually occurs in late November.” When asked, an official engaged in construction of the six-lane bridge under construction over the Brahmaputra connecting Guwahati and North Guwahati said, “We have been working for the last three years. “We have never seen such a huge drop in the water level of this river in October.” Also Read – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says major crimes are coming down in the state When Sentinel contacted CWC (Central Water Commission) officials in Guwahati, they provided data which showed the rise in river water level. A huge shortage was observed. According to CWC, the water level of Brahmaputra in Guwahati read 44.65 meters this morning. This evening it came down to 44.56 meters. On October 15, 2023, the water level of Brahmaputra was 47.14 meters. According to CWC, the water level of Brahmaputra this evening was 103.43 meters at Dibrugarh, 82.67 meters at Nematighat in Jorhat district, 61.69 meters at Tezpur in Sonitpur district, 32.01 meters at Goalpara and 25.72 meters at Dhubri.
