Chennai 220 electric buses planned to enhance metro connectivity

Chennai, April 13:

Commuting to metro stations in Chennai may soon become easier, as the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority and Chennai Metro Rail Limited plan to operate 220 electric low-floor buses to improve first-mile and last-mile connectivity. The service is expected to begin by December 2026.

To tailor routes to commuters’ needs, a city-wide survey is being conducted through the Chennai One app. Users are asked about their starting point, metro stations used, travel mode, and last-mile challenges, as well as any specific needs such as accessibility support.

The proposed fleet will consist of 70 larger 7-meter buses and 150 smaller 5-meter buses, all electric and air-conditioned. These buses will primarily cover areas within a 5 km radius of metro stations, especially in areas with limited public transport access.

Depending on demand, approximately 20 buses can be deployed at each station.
The buses will be operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, with flexible routes initially. Officials said that before finalizing the routes, they will be fine-tuned based on commuter usage.

Officials have urged people to participate in the survey, saying that more feedback will help design routes that better meet daily travel needs.
