Karnataka to soon include millet dishes in midday meal and Indira canteen menus

BENGALURU: The state government may soon include millet dishes in the food provided at mid-day meals and Indira canteens. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who inaugurated the ‘Millet and Organic International Trade Fair 2024’ on Friday, said he would soon call a meeting with the departments concerned to decide on the use of millet.

“Millet is healthy and will make our students and citizens stronger. Millet can be grown even in areas with low rainfall and poor soil fertility. They come with many health benefits and hence, the state government is also keen on organizing millet fairs.

He said the state would also set up a dedicated innovation center to promote millets. “The center will facilitate production of high quality millet seeds, development of new varieties and improvement in export of millets,” Siddaramaiah said.

He also said that there is a need to grow chemical free food because consumption of chemical mixed food is considered to be the main cause of many diseases.

“Grains are high in nitrogen, sodium, vitamins and fiber. Studies have shown that consumption of food mixed with chemicals is also a major cause of many diseases. Consuming organic grains is important,” he said.

Noting that organic and whole grains have become increasingly popular and are also healthier, Siddaramaiah said the government is taking measures to encourage cultivation of organic and millet crops.
