Money withdrawn from bank account using duplicate SIM card, two arrested

New Delhi| Delhi Police has arrested two fraudsters. Simultaneously, the police have unearthed a unique modus operandi of cyber fraud, in which the accused obtained a duplicate mobile SIM card of a victim and transferred all the money from his account. An official has given this information on Monday. The accused have been identified as Yatish Kumar, a resident of Bijnor district and Dharmendra Kumar alias Raman Yadav, a resident of Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, an FIR was registered at the cyber police station in Shahdara in which complainant Rizwan Alam alleged that he had taken a loan, to repay which he sold a small shop and deposited a total of Rs 5 lakh. Ujjivan Small Finance Bank account was deducted through multiple UPI transactions without receiving any OTP.

During investigation, a police team collected the banking details in which the fraudulent amount was transferred and found that the entire amount was transferred to three accounts in Federal Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank.

Shahdara DCP Rohit Meena said bank accounts were found registered in the name of Yatish. The bank statements were analyzed and it was found that the maximum amount was withdrawn in cash. Yatish was arrested after a raid from his village Padampur in Bijnor district.

During interrogation, Yatish revealed that he had taken a loan from the Sunny loan app and was harassed by recovery agents when he was not able to pay the EMI on time.

The DCP said that Yatish started talking to agents of Sunny loan app to offer him a job through which he would pay the EMI and then he got in touch with Dharmendra, who was connected only through WhatsApp calls.

Dharmendra offers Yatish to work for him and give him the account details, for which he will get Rs 50,000. Dharmendra was traced to Mahipalpur and arrested, the officer said.

Dharmendra told the police that he bought the SIM from a Canopy of Vodafone located in Sector-63, Noida on the fake ID of the complainant, then activated the PhonePe and Mobile Bank applications using that number.

After installing PhonePe using the said number, they received a notification to recharge a mobile number through which they thought it to be the complainant’s family number. Then he contacted on that number and told that he is calling from Ujjivan bank and due to some technical problem he is not able to issue his cheque.

The DCP said that Dharmendra obtained the debit card photo and Aadhaar card details. Then he transferred the entire cheated five lakh rupees to Yatish’s account and took cash from him after giving his share. Then deposited all the cash in his IDFC bank. During investigation, the defrauded amount was seized and will be returned to the complainant soon.

The DCP said that during the investigation Dharmendra was also found to be linked to the Chinese loan application and was in direct contact with the Chinese people which is being probed.
