Rs 100 crore allocated for Tura bulk water supply
Initiatives to address water scarcity in Meghalaya’s Tura town have received a significant boost as the central government has sanctioned Rs 100 crore for the Tura Bulk Water Supply Scheme. Minister Marquis N Marq highlighted the development citing the inclusion of the scheme under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS).
The primary objective is to tackle the water scarcity prevalent in Tura. Marak stressed on early implementation of the plan to mitigate the challenges faced by the city’s residents. He said that upon completion of the requisite processes, a tender will be issued immediately to start the project.
The Minister underlined the multifaceted benefits of the scheme while emphasizing on the proposal to set up a multipurpose reservoir. This reservoir, apart from enhancing water supply, is intended for various uses such as irrigation and potential eco-tourism ventures. Additionally, Marak stressed the important role these reservoirs play in an emergency, which will assist firefighting vehicles in critical situations.
Expanding beyond Tura, the state government is actively seeking support from the central government for another important water supply project – this time directed towards New Shillong township. This ambitious endeavor aims to meet the growing needs of the township, ensuring sustainable and adequate water supply for its residents.
The proposed water reservoirs are not only a solution to immediate water shortage but also a visionary initiative to meet future demands. By integrating multi-purpose reservoirs, the plan not only solves the current water shortage but also lays the groundwork for potential spin-off benefits such as eco-friendly tourism and emergency preparedness.
In short, Tura Bulk Water Supply Scheme marks an important step towards reducing water crisis in Meghalaya. Its implementation and planned reservoir construction reflects a comprehensive approach to deal with immediate needs while making strategic plans for future needs. The proactive stance of the Government in seeking support for the water supply of New Shillong Township indicates a broader commitment to ensuring sustainable and adequate water resources across the State.
