Tamil Nadu tops South India in terms of treatment in government hospitals, NSI data released

Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu has the highest rate of patients seeking treatment in government hospitals in South India, according to the latest data released by the National Statistical Institute (NSI). The data is based on the recently released state-wise health service utilization, which analyzes treatment patterns in government and private hospitals.
According to the report, in the past year, 47.5 percent of people in rural Tamil Nadu received treatment in government hospitals, compared to 38.6 percent in urban areas. Overall, the state recorded a 43 percent rate of patients receiving treatment in government hospitals, the highest in South India.
The NSI study also compares these with other southern states. Andhra Pradesh reported 26.9 percent, Kerala 30 percent, Karnataka 29.8 percent, and Telangana 29.3 percent. In western states, this figure was 25.9 percent in Gujarat and only 18.6 percent in Maharashtra, which is significantly lower than in southern states.
Based on these figures, Tamil Nadu ranks first in South India in terms of utilization of government health services. Experts believe that this trend reflects the accessibility and dependence of people on government health facilities in the state.
Responding to this, Tamil Nadu Public Health Minister M. Subramaniam said that due to the state government’s various welfare schemes and expansion of health facilities, more people are turning to government hospitals. He stated that the government’s objective is to provide affordable and quality health care to every citizen.
The minister also said that Ayushman Bharat and state-level health schemes, along with free treatment facilities, have increased public confidence in both rural and urban areas. He claimed that the health infrastructure will be further strengthened in the future.
This report comes at a time when debate continues across the country regarding the accessibility and quality of health services. This performance of Tamil Nadu once again brings to the fore the usefulness of the government health system.
