Sundays and Wednesdays designated as ‘Zero Tolerance Days’ to curb road accidents

Bhubaneswar: In the recently held meeting of the State Road Safety Council, every Sunday and Wednesday was zeroed to be designated as ‘Zero Tolerance Days’ to check the road accidents.

Road accidents are increasing day by day and the casualties in the road accidents have turned into reason of stress for the Odisha government.

Speeding of vehicles, helmet-less driving rash driving and drunk driving have contributed to the road accidents. In order to control the road accidents and the casualties related to it the State Government has taken a major step.

Henceforth, every Sunday and Wednesday will be observed as Zero Tolerance day as per the meeting held at Lok Seva Bhawan on Thursday. The Commerce & Transport Minister Bibhuti Jena has laid stress on the safe returning to home. Stringent action will be taken against the traffic rule violators. They will be penalised as per the rules. Awareness with regard to road safety remained another area of focus in the meeting.

What does Zero Tolerance Day signify?

The traffic police will be at their toes with regular checkings, collection of penalties on these days. No leniency will be allowed with regard to traffic rules. The status of accidents in the state, reason behind the accident, identification of accident-prone area will be done. Additionally identification of faulty roads and their reparation work has been on the agenda of the government. Check on drunk driving, CCTV installation and plan to reduce the road accidents in Urban as well as rural areas were discussed in the meeting.

The state recorded 3,717 deaths from 6,327 road accidents with speeding and rash driving being the major causes of accidents.
